The ankle joint is the articulation between the bones of the shin (tibia and fibula) and one of the tarsal bones of the foot (talus). The ankle is a highly conforming joint which allows flexion and extension. There is minimal rotation in the ankle joint itself but the talus articulates with the other bones of the foot which allows inversion / eversion (sideways movement) and rotation.
